A History of CESI

School of Environment Science and Spatial Informatics(CESI), China University of Mining and Technology was established in June, 2000 on the basics of amalgamation of School of Mining, School of Resources and School of Chemical Engineering and Technology.

Teaching and Research Platforms

CESI consists of Department of Mapping and Geographic Information System, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, and Department of Land Resource Management. With the continuous development and improvement of the school, CESI offers 5 undergraduate degree programs (Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Land Resource Management and Geographic Information System), 3 first-level programs for doctorate degree granting(Surveying and Mapping, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Public Administration), 9 sub doctorate-accredited fields(e.g.), 11 master-accredited fields(e.g. Physical Geography), 2 master-accredited fields(Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Environmental Engineering), 2 mobile stations for the post-doctors(Surveying and Mapping, Environmental Science and Engineering).

CESI has many key research centers and labs: one National Engineering Practice Education Center; one National Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center; two Central Laboratories of the Mapping and Land Information, and the Environmental Science and Engineering; a provincial training base of Space and Land Resources Information; one Earth surface integrated model simulation; one Numerical Analysis Research Center; one China-UK Geospatial Information Joint Research Center; one China - Africa International Cooperation Laboratory of Mine Space and Geographic Information and so on. Moreover, CESI has established or co-established a Awareness Mine National Joint Engineering Laboratory, a NASG Key Laboratory ofLand Environment and Disaster Monitoring, Environment Information Engineering Lab etc.

Research achievements and fields

Since 2004, CESI has headed over 40 projects including general projects, major projects and international cooperation projects from National Natural Science Foundation, nine 973 and 863projects, one National Major Scientific and Technological Project, 20 projects from National Key Technology Support Program, 10 scientific research projects from public service industry, one project from Institutions of Higher Learning Discipline Innovative Plan and three projects funded by National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation. The major research fields cover Engineering and Mining Survey, Geodetic Surveying, Global Positioning System and Navigation, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Geographic information System, Digital City and Digital Mine, Environment and Disaster Monitoring, Mining Subsidence and Mining under the Village, the Railway and the Water, Resources and Environment Evaluation, Planning and Management and Land Rehabilitation and Ecological Reconstruction, Land Resources Management and Appraisal of Real Estate, Air Pollution Control and Water Resources protection, Mine Water Disaster and Geological Disaster Prevention and Control, Solid Waste Disposal, Cleaner Production and Circular Economy and so on. Besides, CESI has won seven National Science and Technology Progress, 18 first prizes, 31 second prizes and 21 third prizes of provincial science and technology Progress and one gold award in national GIS engineering. The School has published over 40 teaching materials and books, and thousands of papers in the journals such as Science.

CESI has 115 faculties, including 29 professors, 1 research fellow, 45 associate professors, 19 lecturers and 3 post-doctoral fellows. At the same time, professor Li Deren (academician of Chinese academy of sciences and academician of the Chinese academy of engineering and academician of the Eurasian academy of sciences)was employed as Dean of CESI, and there is 1 member of the evaluation committee of surveying and mapping subject of the state council's degree committee, 4 members of the teaching steering committee of higher schools of the Ministry of Education,1 member of the science and technology committee of Chinese Society for Surveying Mapping and Geoinformation, 1 specially-appointed professor of “Cheung Kong Scholars Program”, 1 member of “Thousands of People Plan”, and 1 member of the Hundred People Plan of the Chinese academy of sciences.

Academic Cooperation and Exchanges

CESI attaches great importance to academic exchanges, and hold extensive range of events in partnership with more than 100 famous universities, academic groups, research institutions and enterprises and institutions in China and abroad. Every year, about 20 teachers go abroad for lectures, cooperative research and academic meetings; 5-10 graduate students were sent abroad to famous universities for joint training; andsome undergraduates can receive united training or study for mater degree in one of 2 + 2, 3 + 1,or 4 + 1 modes overseas.

Adhering to the proficiency, professionalism, excellence concept, CESI will strive to become a multidisciplinary interaction facilitated, well-coordinated and distinctive school, and then become the first-class, internationally influential base in China for personnel training, scientific research and social service.
